Ancient Art, Sacred Science-
Traditional Thai Yoga Therapy
In 2004, I was introduced to traditional Thai yoga therapy by my
fellow teacher, Gabriel Hall. I had a series of treatments with Gabriel during a challenging and stressful period in my life. I very much appreciated the interactive nature of this ancient healing modality as a potent exchange of energy between giver and receiver. It was truly unlike any other type of body work I had ever experienced and its therapeutic benefits were immensely impactful. Then, in 2008, I was able to revisit Thai yoga therapy during my yoga teacher training with Saul David Raye, who is one of the main teachers of this healing art in the U.S. This time though, I was able to get a taste of what it felt like to play the role of practitioner rather than recipient. I was instantly hooked and became inspired to become a practitioner myself.
In the fall of 2010, I had the great privilege of traveling to the place where this tradition has been rooted for the last 2000+ years, Northern Thailand- Chiang Mai to be exact. I trained with a master teacher who was a senior student of Saul's teacher, Asokananda. After spending a month studying and immersing in the cultural & spiritual traditions of Southeast Asia, I returned home a certified practitioner of this sacred healing art, following in the footsteps of my teachers, their teachers and all the teachers that came before them.
Some History
Thai yoga therapy dates back over 2500 years and was founded in India by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha who was the physician to Buddha and his sangha (order of monks and nuns). It is rooted in ayurveda and Buddhist spiritual practice and is the physical application of metta- loving kindness- and healing touch. Shortly after its initial development, Thai yoga therapy found its way to Northern Thailand, which has been the center for carrying on the tradition ever since. This healing modality combines rhythmic massage, acupressure, stretching and gentle twisting to open the flow of prana- vital life force energy- throughout the main energy lines of the body, resulting in a powerful release of stress and tension. As a result, the recipient is brought into greater balance, harmony & vitality while the connection between mind, body & spirit is deepened. Additional benefits of traditional Thai yoga therapy are:
- Release of muscular stress & tension
- Release of mental and emotional stress & tension
- Improved circulation
- Boost in immune system
- Increased metabolism
- Balancing of the subtle energy bodies
Thai yoga therapy is different than massage techniques we are familiar with in the west in that it is done on the floor on padded mats. All that is required of the recipient is that they wear comfortable clothing (just like what you'd wear to yoga class) and prepare to be relaxed deeply!
Testimonials
"Thanks again for the amazing massage, Kim! I have to say that my experience was unlike any other massage I've ever had before. I was a bit skeptical at first because I have never been into yoga, and I wasn't sure what to expect. However, after the time I spent with you, I don't think I want any other kind of massage again. You provided more than just a massage of the body...it was a massage of the mind and soul as well. A truly hypnotic, therapeutic, and surreal encounter that cleansed my entire body, head to toe. It's an experience that I want to incorporate into my life regularly to pursue a healthy lifestyle" ~Matt Raukko "My Thai Yoga Massage Therapy session with Kim Wolff affected me on all levels- physical, emotional, and spiritual. I felt completely safe in her care. In addition to the physical massage benefits, I accessed and released some emotional baggage, and experienced a personal and profound spiritual opening. It was truly a wonderful experience" ~Marti Walker
"I did Thai yoga massage basically for the novelty of it. I was expecting to like it but was a little concerned about the prospect of having to work due to it being interactive, rather than getting to relax completely. I was pleasantly surprised. It was absolutely amazing! Kim targets areas of your body like your face and stomach that in my experience have sadly gotten overlooked. Also, Kim is SUPER thorough and goes above and beyond in terms of the duration of the massage as well as ensuring that she addresses your entire body. I definitely did not expect to like it as much as the Swedish massages that I was used to, but I did. I continue to go back to Kim to get these innovative, wonderful treatments on a regular basis" ~Alison Leff
"Kim has the most powerful healing touch. You feel the energy flowing from her hands throughout your body, releasing all the stagnant energy. You leave your session in total bliss, relaxed, rejuvenated and spiritually balanced"
~Esther Randolph
"Kim's thai massage is my favorite thing to do. I consider it an integral part of my wellness program. She is a highly skilled practitioner with a soft, yet firm and intuitive touch. The massage leaves me energized yet also relaxed and calm. This is not a spa massage where you are passively kneaded. It is a deep, interactive full body treatment that is unlike any other massage I have had. I highly recommend it"
