Childhood memories of standing on a chair alongside my Sicilian Grandmother as she cooked up familial recipes in her cozy kitchen, inspired my love for good food and fresh, healthful ingredients.
She’s what I’d call an intuitive cook- never using recipes, but rather, adding spices and ingredients a pinch here and a handful there. Bearing witness to her process instilled in me, the confidence to become an intuitive cook myself. That’s how my Turmeric Love Tonic recipe developed. It’s based on the classic golden milk recipe to which I added other ingredients that I felt could enhance the original with complementary flavors and supplementary health benefits.
I’m pleased to introduce this life changing elixir to those of you who may be unfamiliar with it.
Golden milk (or turmeric tea, as it’s sometimes called), dates back thousands of years and has its roots in ayurveda. It was, and still is, used to aid digestion, strengthen the immune system, detox the liver, ease muscle soreness and joint pain, purify the blood, clear the skin, and fight against restless sleep.
The key ingredient in golden milk is turmeric- a superfood spice that contains a compound called curcumin which has been revered for centuries for it’s incredibly powerful therapeutic properties. Curcumin is anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, digestive, balances blood sugar and is believed to lower the risk of cancer.
Something really incredible about golden milk is the combination of ingredients that work synergistically to help optimize turmeric’s benefits.
When turmeric is combined with black pepper and a little bit of healthy fat, it’s absorption rate is improved and assimilation enhanced. There’s a compound in black pepper called piperine that increases the bioavailability of curcumin up to 2000%. By adding a little bit of coconut oil or ghee (clarified butter) to your golden milk, the curcumin will be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lymphatic system.
Ginger is another key ingredient in the traditional golden milk spice blend.
It’s loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that are antioxidant + anti-inflammatory and have other powerful benefits for your body and brain, such as aiding in digestion, combating nausea, alleviating muscle pain and soreness, balancing blood sugar, decreasing the risk of heart disease, helping to lower cholesterol and assisting in soothing menstrual pain. Additionally, raw ginger contains a powerful anti-cancer compound called 6-gingerol.
The spices that I’ve added to the traditional recipe provide bonus benefits and subtle flavors that produce a warming, comforting, heart-opening effect while deeply nourishing body and soul. It’s been a hit with family and friends ever since I first started sharing it and is especially delicious during the colder winter months.
– Nutmeg is a delicate, slightly sweet spice that helps to relieve pain, alleviate indigestion, improve cognitive function, detoxify the body, boost skin quality, reduce insomnia, strengthen the immune system and stimulate blood circulation.
– Cardamom contains aromatic properties that are spicy, sweet, herbal and a tiny bit citrusy. Not only has it been used as an aphrodisiac for centuries, but it also contains medicinal properties that protect the gastrointestinal tract, help to control cholesterol, fight against cancer, relieve cardiovascular issues, improve blood circulation and combat impotence.
– Raw Honey (or liquid gold, as I like to call it), has been prized for centuries for its myriad healing + beauty benefits and luscious sweetness. It’s known primarily for its potent antibacterial and antifungal properties. Honey also helps to alleviate allergies, boost memory, suppress coughing and aid in sound sleep.
– Dried Rose Petals contain polyphenols, a natural antioxidant well known for the ability to repair cellular damage and protect against serious illnesses including heart disease, bone weakness and cancer. When used as an ingredient in tea, the range of benefits expand to include easing of menstrual pain, promotion of healthier skin and hair, boosting of the immune system, soothing sore throats, improving digestion and alleviating stress and anxiety. Rose petals produce a fragrant aroma and sweet taste that open the heart and inspire feelings of warmth and affection.
Kim’s Turmeric Love Tonic Recipe
*Makes two 8 oz. servings. Can be prepared ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Warm before serving.
– 2 1/4 C. almond or coconut Milk *You can use other kinds of nut or hemp milk if prefered
– 1 tsp. turmeric powder or 3 tsp. freshly grated turmeric root
– 1/4 tsp. ginger powder or 3 tsp. freshly grated ginger root
– ⅛ tsp. nutmeg
– Pinch of cardamom
– Pinch of black pepper *freshly cracked if possible
– 2 tsp. dried organic rose petals for the tea + a little extra for garnishing
– 1 tsp. coconut oil or ghee *I prefer coco oil
– Raw honey to taste *can be substituted with coconut sugar or agave nectar
Combine nut milk, turmeric, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, black pepper and rose petals in a pot over medium-high heat. Whisk to combine and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to very low and simmer, whisking occasionally for 5-10 minutes. Note: the longer you simmer, the more infused the flavors become. Remove from heat and whisk in coconut oil (or ghee) and raw honey. Strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into mugs or tea bowls and garnish with a few rose petals. Serve immediately, sip slowly and enjoy!
