Two Women, Two Perspectives

Reflecting On The Mother-Daughter Retreat Experience

3 generations kim wolff yoga
3 generations of women – grandmother, mama, and daughter – who joined me on retreat in California in January 2016. Grand-mama traveled all the way from Russia to share this experience with her daughter and granddaughter. I snapped this photo right before they departed for home. All 3 are radiating pure love and joy.

Incredibly potent, meaningful, and magical transformations happen when a mother and daughter retreat together.

I’ve had the privilege of bearing witness to this process many times over the years. It’s an experience like no other – an archetypal journey that leaves an indelible mark on the hearts and souls of the women who enter into sacred space together.

Healing happens. Bonds are strengthened. Awakenings occur. Love deepens.

It’s a rare chance to feel safe and supported in being our most authentic, vulnerable Selves. The opportunity to get to know one another in a way that may not have presented itself prior-to is granted.

A greater sense of where we came from, and who we are at our core is realized. Gratitude for a stronger sense of Self, and other is discovered.

I speak from experience when I say that one of the most special and significant gifts in my life was that of having my daughter Emi, join me on retreat. The memory of that precious time will never fade from memory, and will always be a source of joy.

I’m thrilled to introduce you to two guest bloggers who write eloquently about this very subject.

They’re both beloved students, and repeat retreat attendees, who generously share their experiences; one from a daughter’s perspective, and one from a mother’s point of view. Read on for Christina and Paloma’s stories, and feel free to share your in comments if inspired.

kim wolff yoga blog mother daughter retreat experienceThere are some experiences that really cannot be described or explained using words…it is the feeling(s) that emerges which can bring you right back to that special place and time.

The magic of the Bowen Island Retreat in beautiful British Columbia was just this type of experience. What made this retreat even more meaningful was having the opportunity to share it with my Mom.

I have been practicing yoga for about ten years and have always seen it as a sacred act. One in which I could re-connect to the core of my being through movement and breath. Each time I step on the mat, it is like I am re-born. In attending this retreat with my Mom, I wasn’t just flowing through the poses next to her, I was connecting with her in a much deeper way by sharing an experience that is so close to my heart.

My Mom and I were in full “Post- Retreat Bliss” for several weeks following this beautiful experience. We would talk about everything from the amazing yoga dome to the delicious food, and the wonderful connections we both made during our time on Bowen Island. Most importantly, we would talk about how it made us FEEL. A pure sense of calm and peace, and knowing we could return to this feeling in our own minds anytime we wanted.

As my Mom and I continued to reminisce about our amazing time, I realized I was seeing that same glow; that same sense of inner peace and connection to Self in my Mom, that I had experienced. This truly made my heart happy. Both my Mom and I were re-born.

kim wolff mother daughter yoga retreatWhen you have a beautiful relationship with your daughter, you can’t imagine what can make it better, and then you go to Kim’s retreats and you realize that taking the time to take care of your body, mind and soul can make a big difference.

We have been blessed with that opportunity a few times, and now we are always looking forward to the next experience. Like a puzzle, every piece fits perfectly, and after a few days of yoga classes, meditation, walks in nature, delicious healthy meals, and new friendships, we come back home rejuvenated, re-energized, happier and more relaxed.

The retreats are planned to the last small detail. Every one of your senses is activated and you learn to appreciate the importance of every moment. You realize how, with a few changes in your daily routine, you can make everyday a special day.

We reinforce our connection with the Universe, and everything that surrounds us. We stop for a moment to embrace every lesson and every breath. Inspiration, creativity, gratitude, compassion and kindness fills our hearts. It’s a gift to our lives…It’s like opening a present everyday to become a better and stronger person, to give our best to our families and friends, and to be an example to the next generation.
